The six million dollar question Have all the vehicles in the U.A.E owned by the locals had their indicator stalks removed from their steering columns or is it that they are all to busy drinking tea and using mobiles to indicate which direction they want to travel in :)
Zapata
Dont give driving lessons in the Gulf. Adjust.
arniegang
thats how it is, love it or hate it :? :? |
Chocoholic
Wrong answer! If people were educated and taught how to drive properly, there would be less accidents, injuries and deaths on the roads. Sadly we're not all mind readers and can't guess where people are going to go, hence the need to use indicators - geez another brainless idiot! |
Zapata
Well, ya perhaps not the "right" answer but certainly the most practical one. If I bothered to care about how others drive here I would have smashed in someones face by now.
yshimy
| With all respect to your opinions.... Yes, They might be doing that, but i don't think this is the cause of the accidents. Check statistics, rarely locals are involved in accidents. But i do agree on :
It is this way, don't like it. go drive somewhere else.. Stop nagging about Dubai. |
Mr & Mrs Inquirer
Well well we do have some funny views on here The Police in the UAE should get of their back sides and start doing their jobs correctly by making the roads SAFE again and stopping all the clowns from using cell phones, drinking tea & coffee which is an offence known as reckless driving because when the road users of the UAE are shown on T.V net works around the world it makes the UAE road users look very very silly indeed and totally back ward
yshimy
Read about some celeb who were caught by radar speeding, and the photo showed her doing her make up in the car's mirror. Saw this yesterday here, and guess what, she wasn't a local lady ;)
Mr & Mrs Inquirer
QUOTE;Read about some celeb that were caught by radar speeding, and the photo showed her doing her make up in the car's mirror. What a very strange story especially when speeding radar cameras are targeting the rear registration plates of vehicles People need to get real; the state of the driving by uae nationals is very poor They all so need to remove head gear and start to paying attention to the road also darkened front end glass should be from vehicles to in crease all round vision and in crease road safety
fayz
Okay you tool, have you ever even been to Dubai, ALL cameras in Dubai take pictures of the front plate.:roll::roll::roll: |
Mr & Mrs Inquirer
Your rules only apply to you we have road angles and 210mph vehicel
Chocoholic
Not on the way to Abu Dhabi they don't - they're all rear facing on the fast stretch of road. And Yshimy, with regards to locals driving, they are the worst. They cause the accidents then naff off which is what has happened to several people I know. With their recklessness they cause accidents and then just drive off! Plus your attitude of 'if you don't like it go away' is nothing short of pathetic and narrow minded. I'm sorry but I'd like to see people driving and safe guarding others lives, not having a total disgregard for the lives of others! According to a new report the UAE has the third most deadliest roads in the world, behind Saudi Arabia and Oman - hardly a record to be proud of is it? Plus all you men out there, the fact that Saudi is top, proves that men are crap drivers, seeing as women aren't allowed to drive - nah nah nanana! |
fayz
If i'm not mistaken the rear facing ones are when you are in Abu Dhabi, remember the Abu Dhabi border is only 5-10 mins from Jebal Ali. |
Chocoholic
True. But it means you have to watch your arse - hehehe.
ilfab
Ho please lads ! don't give me that like it or leave stuff... that's what the Front national (racist party) argument is toward foreigners in France when they complain (most of the time about racism, low wage etc...) You don't want justify everything that goes wrong by the fact that people should leave if they don't like it? If everyone complains enough about those kind of problem, it might become a national concern and attract the attention of the Government. I agree that "nagging" will not change those behaviour straight away, but on the other hand, if we sit on our arses and don't say a word there is about 99.99% that nothing will change. So keep complaining, even if that doesn't change things, at least it feels good !!!!!
GAB
The trouble is here that everyone-except me :angel4: and of course Chocoholic :angel13: -adopts that "when in Rome" attitude. I know expats who don't even belt their kids in-that is just sooooooo stupid when they come from countries that show the dire consequences of that sort of irresponsibility on ads on TV. The fact that you know you can get away with something doesn't make it right, it just makes that person ignorant and stupid.
arniegang
ahhhhh hemmmmmmmm excuse me Gabs - i think you are being just a bit biased and selective Gabs and Choc the driving angels indeed
kanelli
There are fewer locals getting into accidents on the roads because there are hardly any locals in this country
ilfab
lol !!! :blob5:
yshimy
exactly, thank you kanelli Fayz, i don't know why poeple when get stuck with their back to the corner, just give a laugh and don't comment... Like this MR& MRs Smith about Back plates Radars..!!!! Some people here just like to through everything on "Locals" they can't just face the reality... For me i expect "not sure and just sharing with you" that accidents happen because most people here are "Right hand drivers" and come here "left hand driving" and when someone do mistake, the reflexes are different. i belive in emergencies you don't like think, it just reflexes.... Anyway, Drive safe everyone... BTW.. what pisses me off about all this nagging about "dangerous roads" is that someday we will wake up with speed limit of 90 km on sheikh zayed and main roads and trip to work will get longer Also... i never believe that speed is the cause of accidents, it is even stupidity, carlessness, or drivers who can't act on emergencies.
kanelli
I think that 120 km/hr is definitely fast enough because the majority of studies prove that speed does kill. If some pedestrian crosses the highway, or something falls off a truck, or a car breaks down you can still find yourself in trouble, even if it wasn't related to someone else's bad driving habits. Basically, if people are courteous, use their lane change signals and plan their route instead of cutting people off or backing up to catch an exit - then the roads would be safer. There are too many selfish people here of all nationalities who think that their trip is more important than someone else's. In the end, selfish and uncivilised driving practices result in slower traffic, more deaths and more injuries. The police and driving schools could go a long way to solving this problem, but instead they are contributing to the problem, unfortunately. No matter how beautiful and fun our Murano is, it is a machine for getting us from point a to point b safely - it isn't a toy or a weapon.
yshimy
Agree with you in every point except 1) speed kill Well in Germany, there is no speed limit on the AutoBhan and guess what, very low accident rate and fatility rate, and will not compare it to dubai. i was doing 220, and had to take the 4th lane in some occasions as some cars were flashing me. 2) 120 is fast enough. I agree, but dis-agree with the reasons about car breakdowns, people pass the road, something fall of the truck. This get us to my previous point which is "emergency managment/reaction" If we considered these situations as a norm, we wouldn't do more than 40 k/h, but still should be accounted for but not building the speed limit on people passing the road or next thing is speed limit is 40 and speed bumps in SZR. Because... it is HIGH WAY. Cheers, Drive safe
Mr & Mrs Inquirer
Well in Germany, there is no speed limit on the AutoBhan and guess what, very low accident rate and fatility rate, The reason for this is they have police that do what they are paid to do and the keep the fools of the road unlike other places
GAB
It is the combination of speed, inexperience and stupidity-the latter being the main cause. Last night I was stopped at the lights next to a car with no lights on (der, it's dark) and we waited for the lights to change-they didn't so the car next to me just drove through  Yep, only in Dubai!! People undertake and overtake here using exit points on the main roads to gain a few car lengths-you have to keep your wits about you for every possible stupid senario possible.
devilsmind
many people don't know bout the advance driving program by EDI ... in that they teach u how to all the emergency tactics needed to drive on dubai roads when a f*cker infront u suddenly brakes hard...and other stuff... also i'm sure that everyone here must've read in the papers about the new express-way that is going to be build on the dubai-shj road all the way to garhoud bridge...
devilsmind
WHAT!!?? its a highway! there are supposed to be no pedestrians there...now its a completely different story when people don't wanna walk to the nearest zebra crossing or the pedestrian bridge...i've seen people run for their lives when crossing near the city centre rd towards garhoud bridge... if ur car breaks down...it doesn't suddenly stop...ur speed reduces until u finally stop...till then pull-the-f*ck-over...
totally agree...i'm one of 'em selfish ppl though  |
fayz
Sorry I don't get what you wrote, was i stuck with my back to the corner? not in an argumentative tone, just trying to understand. Also I don't think I've ever blamed any one nationality. There are many A-holes from all walks of life, i'm proud to be one of them ;) Kanelli, just to give you a hard time and stay on my theme of you need to read a newspaper, the speed limit is 140 after the 3rd interchange and 160 when you hit the AD border on SZR :P :P |
kanelli
Fayz
Chocoholic
It's not just on the roads that people are selfish either. Example, today I went to Town Centre and after I got out my car, a national in a big land cruiser parks across two spaces. When he got out I asked him if his car was really so big that he had to take up more than one space and what he was doing was actually quite selfish. He jokingly asked if I worked for Dubai Police, but then apologised and to my surprise got back in his car and re-parked - I nearly fainted! Sometimes it pays to make people aware what they're doing is wrong. The guy was very apologetic, but I wonder how long before he does it again.
ilfab
sorry to go back on previous posts, but Yshimi said that in germany there's no limit... Wrong, it's only on some portions of motorway and guess what, they have a much higher death rate than the ones with an actual limit... Speed kills like it or not, it's true that's it's also a combination, it's not only speed, it's espacially unapropriate speed eg : It's raining, u're on SZR, the limit is 120 K/h, heavy traffic, what do u do? if u do 120, u're not doing anything illegal but on the other hand , it's extremely dangerous. Do u see my point ?

name and shame these killer drivers www.dumbestdrivers.com
SheikhaS
yet again we are blaming locals for everything!!! Hmmm...lets see.today the papers are reporting about a man killed on Shk Rashid Road by a drunk driver...............oops and the nationality was bulgarian!!Shockarama!! I dont see Choco and her army ranting and raving about Bulgarians!! Oh and the maximum sentence coud be 2 years for killing the guy and driving under the influence it was reported............Hmm.a 2 year sentence only?! Must have a chance of getting off lightly coz hes Bulgarian eh?!
jag
Hey mate, that other case was for rape and the locals getting just two years while you see other nationailites getting much stiffer sentences - nothing really for you to make into a funny subject. In car accidents it seems everyone gets off easy here which is a very sad state of affairs. However, the fact is that many locals drive like maniacs and cant see shit with those 100% tints (READ THE ARTICLE ABOUT A LOCAL WHO KILLS THREE PEOPLE ON THE HIGHWAY CUZ HE COULDNT SEE TEM WITH HIS 100% TINTS). 99% of the time when I have had someone come inches behind my car and flash me, its been a tinted out car. And I guess the reason why the insurance for many cars here for loca drivers is HIGHER since they're such careful drivers eh? |
sniper420
true noticed it. Once I was outside a shopping mall a local was backing out and it almost did hit me . I was pissed and started swaering at the guy.he was smiling like and @ss |
G
Totally agree with Jag.....from my visits to Dubai 99% of the bad driving is by arogant locals, who really can't drive for sh@t!! Used to be that you came to Dubai and the taxi driver would be Indian....now these guys are great drivers, cos they know that if they crash, then no-matter who's fault the accident is then they will be getting the blame. Nowadays you come to Dubai and many of the taxi drivers are locals - unfortunately they drive like idiots, with not a thought for the comfort of the passenger....it's got to the stage I'm thinking about refusing local taxi drivers. This may be my opinion, but it's based upon 100% experience and facts!!
hosrom_951
Nah, they think those are for interior decoration reasons to make the car 'road worthy' and legal. They are just don't wish to spend 1 calorie to flip an indicator, and they think everyone can see the car, hence know which lane to go. Or maybe it is just that they have their feet on the dahsboard, or feet on the dash, one hand on the phone, the other smoking a cigarette and shifting gears....... Did i win the 6 mill? :D |
Mr & Mrs Inquirer
we are blaming locals for everything!!! and why not?
Chocoholic
Ok then here's one for you! I was driving home last night and 3 'Locals' were hairing down the road weaving in and out and undertook me doing crazy speeds, I'm just coming up to a junction to turn left hence being in the left lane. And the moron cuts past me and slams on the brakes as the light turns red. When I beep him and give him a flash to let him know I think his driving is unacceptable, the twat puts his car in reverse and threatens to bash my car! I ask you, what kind of normal human being acts this way? What gives him the right to threaten me! I was so mad!!!!
Kitster
i believe the locals have big heads because you cant win against them...be it in driving or anything else...when you go to court with one of them, or even to the police station, you can almost not win...even if its their fault, you get shouted at like it was you whos to be blamed...tragic...
Mr & Mrs Inquirer

oh crap I guess i need to get my double barrelled shotgun when i am there
Liban
Whats up with all the local bashing???? You people need to get your heads out of your asses and realize the the worst drivers are British and European expats. They are agressive, they are rude, they gesture with vulgarity, and the are simply oblivious to their surroundings. Also, for G, 99% of taxi rivers in Dubai are locals??? What the hell are you blabbering about? Shows you have NEVER taken a cab in this city. Also Choco, beleive me when I say that Europeans and Brits can also act like complete relards behind the wheel. FACT IS GUYS: 20% of the drivers are locals. 80% are not. And so if most of the drivers here are dicks, then that means that they are mostly expats. Thats means YOU GUYS ARE IDIOT DRIVERS. This is not an attach but a statistical fact.
kanelli
The majority of the idiot drivers come from countries with poor road safety standards - namely India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Lebanon, Egypt, Iran, Jordan etc. There are some idiot drivers from Europe (yes, the UK is part of Europe  ) and North America, but they are on the whole far better drivers than the above mentioned nationalities and the locals. Anyone who says that it is purely the Europeans or North Americans who drive poorly has their head up their ass.
Liban
I disagree somewhat. Desis and British expats (inc. other Euros) are the worst. The rest are secondary. Congratulations for figuring out that Britan is part of Europe. Now for your candy treat go to French Bakery. FYI, until Britan adopts the Euro, it will not be a true European country like France or Germany... Buts thats another story  |
kanelli
They are absolutely not the worst. What roads are you driving on Liban? Maybe your "I hate all Westerners" bias is coming through yet again. Now we are to blame for crappy driving in the UAE, as well as all the other ills of the world. Too funny!
kanelli
Let me point out obvious flaws in your analysis. If the Westerners are the bad drivers, why are Western countries far safer to drive in? Why is there a higher standard of road safety and better policing? Because that is the Western way - keep roads safe and people alive. I'd also like to point out that the majority of the people complaining about the dangers of the driving here are Westerners. If they like chaos on the roads and are bad drivers themselves, why are they complaining about the lack of safety and proper driving standards here?
Liban
The laws in the West are stricter. Thats all. Let me point out the flagrant violation of logic in your post. Most of the expats that DRIVE are westerners. Hence, since most Dubai drivers SUCK, and most of them are westerners, then my logical statement is corraborated and thus sticks. Thank you.
kanelli
That is completely false Liban. My logic still stands strong, as usual.
Liban
In the relm of illogic then your post would be most logical. In real life, you are as wrong in you are just as wrong in your logic as people engaging in bestiality are wrong in their ethics. 8)
Kitster
hmmm...some lcals migh tbe good drivers, some expats are bad drivers...most cab drivers are not locals...and uae driving laws should be stricter... if that being the case, then we should all agree that athe uae needs to be more strict so that everyone would behave. ive seen europeans act like new york cab drivers that are no different from a bat out of hell, ive seen the same from other nationalitys as well, ive seen my fair share, but there should be equality amost all of us, and the laws should apply to EVERYONE not just expats. i mean come on...ive seen the popos let someone off just because he was wearing a kandura too many times. sticter laws and enforcing them on everyone would mean safer streets for all of us.
Chocoholic
The majority of expats in the UAE are not from Western countries so to say that they're all bad is flawed. Of course you're going to get bad drivers from everywhere across the globe, and I find it sad when people who've taken rigorous tests and come from countries with strict laws let their driving go bad, but that's the reality. The other reality is that Indians, Pakistanis and locals are terrible on the roads, not all of course but many of them, mainly because they've never been taught how to drive properly and come from countries without strict enforcement so they don't know any different. 90% of the time when I get cut up, pushed around, undertaken flashed, tail gated it's a local! So don't give us it's the Westerners crap Liban, you've been in the country 5 mintues there are many people on this forum who've been here years and are talking from experience.
Kitster
could it be that liban is a local? hehehehehehehhe
Kitster
come on arnie...liban isnt to blame for the accidents...
Mr & Mrs Inquirer
you need the Brits to police your roads and we will start by removing all Yanks,Indians, Pakistanis and the rag heads from the roads if they violate any driving laws we would put policemen on every street corner and with in one month you would have normal roads again and the clowns will be back to driving camels or donkeys 8)
Kitster
if you remove, all yanks, indians and pakistanis and all the rag heads...there would be only brits who would drive around the UAE...hmmm....how about we just leve everything and just rant in this forum about it? :)
Liban
To the Mr. and Mrs. RETARD INQUIRER. You stupid racist fcuk. Why don't you go back to your pathetic little island that you left because it sucks so much and leave us Yanks, Indians, Pakistanis, and Arabs alone.... If I ever see you on the street, I'll be sure to drive like the countless numbers of British moron drivers out there and run you over. Like the UK has no accidents. LOSER!
Kitster
well, we also take and use oil from them, and now, there are a lot of westerners that go to their country, they work and live there and talking smack about the place...so we are all in the same boat...hahahahahah... arnie, i know what you meant, a car is a car doesnt matter what type or make it is, it gets you from point A to point Z...only girls that have highways in their vagina and traffic lights on their boobs care about that as much... there IS huge restructuring that has to be done with their laws, fix it or not, thats their call on that... as for the west and all of the things about and of it, heres my take on that...the west isnt really making much of an example of itself now does it? as a world's citizen its not really proactivly contributing in the peace and order department...education? i know more dumb people per square inch from the more developed west than the 3rd world countries in the world, and even if they were educated, they dont act like they were...same thing...at least in 3rd world countries, they have an excuse to act or be dumb...in the west where education is free, people take it for granted. thats the great equalizer for all of us. we all have flaws in our systems. a country with predominantly smart people will always be ruled by a corrupt leader...a country with not so smart people would always be lead by a power hungry lunatic who wants to take over the world, a country thats so rich would always have lazy people with little disregard for outsiders and their culture...what did i miss??? point is, we all have flaws...pitty we can only talk about it and not really address them...if we can change in a little way for the better, this would be a better world...BUT...we dont...we like ourselves too much. be it arab, american, europeans, nicaraguan, filipino or what have you...
fayz
You really are a racist ignorant fuck aren't you? Lose the attitude you c9nt. You and your baseball bat are making the roads worse, the influx of road rage is making things on these roads worse. I hope one day you do get in to an altercation with your baseball bat against some rag heads with glocks, go FUCK yourself and address people as that, people. we are all the same, good and bad in all races. |
sniper420
then it would be much easier for Liban and his freinds to do stuffs with them..........hehehe  |
sniper420
u r rite Kitser. Arnie is a person of high principles but low practice........talking about rascism and RESPECT.......I can see how much arrogant he is of his VW beetle and sneering at a poor man car. Car is a car and doesnt matter as long as u drive good. Respect! duh! |
sniper420
Oh my. Fayz out of control  |
Chocoholic
Wow Fayz, chill pill dude. Sniper and Kit, I have to respectfully disagree with you. A car is certainly not a car. I drive a small 4x4 but when I put it in for a service I borrow my dad's little Mazda, and boy do I notice the difference! You get bullied, pushed around, cut up, people think that because you're driving a small car they can bully boy you, it's horrible. Anyway I'm out with the Police as part of the Caltex Roadstar Campaign today, so I shall be asking them about all this!
Kitster
choc...what i was talking about was that a car, is a car no matter what, it just gets you there...you know, since they were talking about a hyndai vs a toyota, beamer what not... as far as road safety with small cars are concerned, i really think that whoever designs such small cars should die inside one in an accident, so they would finally stop making those little cars...its UNSAFE TO BE IN ONE OF THEM..come on..the people that design these cars and the owners and distributors dont even drive them...they drive something else.
arniegang

I will say that I think the UAE needs a multi-national police force, which would undoubtably help. When you're living in a country with so many nationalities speaking so many different languages, it makes sense to have officers who are capable of speaking many different languages to be able to deal with it. Also it would stop the problem of the polcie being too scared to reprimand some people because of their low number licence plate or blacked out windows - we all know it happens so please nobody deny it! Dubai Police are going to be implementing a points system, they sort of have one now but it's crap. So the new one will be similar to that of European countries. 12 points and you lose your licence. Points are normally added in blocks of 3's, 4's or 5's and are issued for speeding offences, light jumping, going down ahrd shoulders etc. That would stop some of the speeding buggers, the ones who 'budget' for their fines every year - how pathetic is that!
Chocoholic
As for Mr & Mrs. I've seen many Westerners driving badly as well, the problem is across the board, but some nationalities are worse than others, but it's stupid to say that Europeans are the best because I've seen some of the driving degenerate so much they're just as bad, and believe me if I catch up with them I damn well let them know it.
fayz
I agree 100%, a multi-national force would help a great deal. |
Liban
I have a hard time picturing a local being lectured by an Indian cop or a European accepting a Dubai policeman's salary... :P |
fayz
but that is the whole point that Indian cop should have the full backup of the police chief and maybe those individuals who believe they are above the law will quickly realize that no one is.
Kitster
wow...another mystery solved yet again... liban has a good point...and put it this way, if you put a multi national police force out there, maybe it would create more problems...think about it...if you were the one to wear a badge, you would beed to be a little patriotic to make that that sacrifice...how could you do that if youre not from this country...different people think differently, and to give it to other nationalities...well...my two fills on this is that its going to create more problems than it would solutions...then theres liban's point...putting that into a realistic context, if you were a yank, pommie, chinese, indian, pakistani etc...would you put yourself in harm's way and possibly dying in a country other than your own? for what?
Liban
Still, I would find it humrous to see those who think they are "superior" to Indians taking a reprimand from them :) |
Liban
Whats a pommie?
Chocoholic
Er guys, there aren't many locals in the police force now!!!!! They're from other GCC cuontries, why do you think they don't reprimand the nationals - they're too scared. If you actually had UAE nationals in the police force, then I think they'd command mroe respect and be able to deal with bad national drivers.
Liban
Actually most of them are from Yemen with Egyptians a close second. Those two countries are NOT in the GCC. Nationals usually take up more senior positions and do not accept what they view as "lower-level" traffic cop duties. |
sniper420
well I guess those who think like that would be spanked by shoes of indian man.....would b cool |

Anrigang you are such a sad person. Unfortunatly I already feel pity many of your comrades and as such have very little left for you. But no matter, many other people on this forum pity you and as such, you are not alone in being pitiful. Be mindful of one thing Arnie, at your age people should be far, oh yes, so much more further down the road of overall success than you would admit to being. Have fun!

doesnt hurt me in the least Sniper. I am sat here all lazy, not having to slave for someone else, with my coffee deciding on which car i am going to drive, now is it the big BMW or my Aston or the cute Z4 or my Range Rover. MMMMMM i just dont know what mood i'm in. 8) 8)

Yeah but the point was hardly any of the 'bobbies on the beat' are locals and therefor command no repsect from locals! I'm out with the 'local' Captain this afternoon and from what the other guys who've been out have been telling me, the police are pretty much clueless. So I'll see for myself and trust me I will be giving hima grilling! |
kanelli
Will the flaming stop now, and can we get back to the original topic! Some of you flamers would do well to read this last paragraph and consider your own driving habits. |

I beleive I hit the bull eye. You certainly are nowhere near where you are supposed to be at your age OVERALL. You measure success with money. Thats fine, but thats not what success in life is measured in. Money accounts for 8-12% of life's success. You would know that if you really are as learned as you think you may be. |
arniegang
nope :D :D :D
Liban
Nice one liners with the smily faces. You are sounding like the fly I asked Sniper to swat. Now I am done with this. Either we get back on topic or I end this thread. Choco, Whats a bobbie?

Choco you didn't answer my question. Whats a bobbie?
Chocoholic
Sorry Liban. A Bobby on the beat is a slang we use in the UK for police who're on patrol either on foot or by car. Also a pom or pommie is a Brit.
Liban
Thanks. I don't understand why Brits are called pommies though?? Like whats the significance of the word? |
GAB
Supposedly an acronym which is the misused ie POM, prisoner of her majesty which means it was a term used for convicts which would mean they are Aussies. The dictionaries definition is pommy- British immigrant to Australia or New Zealand. The term is not used in that way tho'.
arniegang
The slang term pommie eminates from the "great war" 1914-1918. It is a derisive Australian soldier's term for British officers or British men in general (from pomade - hair dressing)
GAB
BS!!    But if u want to stick to that story Arnie, I am sure there was plenty of other names they called them!!
shafique
I love etymology... an alternate derivation of Pom is to be found via google: (I take no credit for searching and cutting and pasting the below :) ) [BTW I like the anecdote/joke about the person who was asked by Australian immigration officers whether he had a criminal record, to which he replied "I didn't know that was still a requirement"! :) :) ] http://www.worldwidewords.org/qa/qa-pom1.htm " [Q] From Rosemary Wetherall: “Is pom short for Port of Melbourne (where the ships docked), Prisoners Of her Majesty, as they were convict ships, or did we all really look like a cargo of pomegranates when we caught the sun? Or is it simply rhyming slang for immigrant?” [A] You’ve done a great job of listing many of the explanations that one comes across for the origin of this Australian term for British immigrants. You could have added a possible derivation from the common naval slang term for Portsmouth, Pompey, or from pommes de terres for potatoes, much eaten by British troops in World War One, or an abbreviation for Permit of Migration. All of them except your last two, I have to tell you, are folk etymology (which, for some reason I’ve never understood, loves to invent origins based on acronyms). Part of the reason for all these theories growing up is that there was for decades much doubt over the true origin of the expression, with various Oxford dictionaries, for example, continuing to say that there is no firm evidence for the pomegranate theory. That origin was described by D H Lawrence in his Kangaroo of 1923: “Pommy is supposed to be short for pomegranate. Pomegranate, pronounced invariably pommygranate, is a near enough rhyme to immigrant, in a naturally rhyming country. Furthermore, immigrants are known in their first months, before their blood ‘thins down’, by their round and ruddy cheeks. So we are told”. You will note that he had to explain the pronunciation that we would now take to be the usual one: in standard English it used not to have the first “e” sounded, with pome often rhyming with home. It is now pretty well accepted that the pomegranate theory is close to the truth, though there’s a slight twist to take note of. H J Rumsey wrote about it in 1920 in the introduction to his book The Pommies, or New Chums in Australia. He suggested that the word began life on the wharves in Melbourne as a form of rhyming slang. An immigrant was at first called a Jimmy Grant (was there perhaps a famous real person by that name around at the time?), but over time this shifted to Pommy Grant, perhaps as a reference to pomegranate, because the new chums did burn in the sun. Later pommy became a word on its own and was frequently abbreviated still further. The pomegranate theory was also given some years earlier in The Anzac Book of 1916. Whatever your beliefs about this one, what seems to be true is that the term is not especially old, dating from the end of the nineteenth century at the earliest, certainly not so far back as convict ship days. "

oi at least us lot are the right way up    |

Very good Shaf! Nice :) The fact is a POM now is used to refer to anybody British.

Mr & Mrs, please oh please stop with your high horse attitude, the rest of us Brits on here have a hard enough time as it is to uphold our reputation and you're making and arse of yourself and the rest of us. Keep your sad opinions to yourself because they're certainly not representative of the rest of us.

OK so I was out with the police today as part of the Caltex Roadstar to reward good drivers. I have to say it was pretty hard to find many at all! The Captain of the police we were out with was local and a very nice man, whilst the officer driving the police car accompanying us was fro Yemen - Liban you were correct most of the officers are fro Yemen or Egypt. The officer said they get so many hassles from pulling bad driving locals, they constantly argue or reel in their mate in high places to get their points taken off or the fines reduced. But he also said many of them are just mouthy and when he's called for back up and hauled them off to the police station they normally are quiet and behave. But he did point out that Nationals are pretty awful on the roads but are getting better, he also said the Indians and Pakistanis are pretty awful too - from the horses mouth so no more arguments over who's worst!!!! They said that there are bad drivers from all nationalities and they have big issues policing the roads. One major issue they have is actually 'slow' drivers, you know the ones who sit in the second lane to the fast one, causing people to undertake them, he said these people cause many accidents and are a pain and they should drive in the right hand lane. For those of you who are interested the nationalities we rewarded were: Sri Lankan, Indian, Iranian, a Scot and two nationals, a man and a woman. It was so funny as we followed the national gentleman we made sure he was wearing a seat belt, he signalled at every turn, kept to the speed limit, he even had his mobile docked in the speaker system. He was so appreciative and said he would donate the money we gave him to charity. Lovely guy and a great example of how all people should drive. We followed one lady for a while as we couldn't see if she was wearing her seat belt. She had a baby in a child seat strapped in, which was good, but sadly, no she wasn't wearing her own seat belt. Some people were really good then would dash through a light as it turned red, or fail to indicate, or push in, weren't wearing seatbelts, talking of the phone, the list is endless. It was a veer interesting experience, had to laugh though as we headed towards Mumzar park two kids flew up the road on quad bikes. The Captain said these things are a big problem and they're very difficult to catch as they just hop over the curb and disappear down a backstreet. Out again on Wednesday. But honestly the police have a long way to go. The points system is onyl being implemented in Abu Dhabi not Dubai.
GAB
Interesting Choco. Great initiative!! Back to my pet hate!! Even on the way to school this morning I saw kids not belted in! Why!!?? It is sooooo irresponsible!! The thing is too these are people with varying nationalities-it particularly appals me though when there is no way these people would do this in their home country. A police blitz is needed and some billboard campaigns. Home has had a few visually sickening advertising campaigns for this sort of thing simultaneously coupled with a police crackdown and fines. It seems to work-I don't know anyone at home who wouldn't belt their kids in and for that matter I've never met a kid at home over the age of five that doesn't automatically belt themselves in. There seems to be a prevailing attitude here that people will do whatever they can because they figure they'll get away with it.
Chocoholic
Hey GAB, Well Caltex and the Motor Sport Federation will soon be taking an initiative into schools to teach children about safety in cars. Children should be taught to belt themselves in the back of the car and to tell the parent to make sure they're buckled up.
